Exercise 8: ‘I Can Handle This’ Mantra Cards

Exercise 8: ‘I Can Handle This’ Mantra Cards

What It Is:
A self-talk practice that helps kids learn to soothe themselves with strong, positive words — written on simple cards or slips of paper.

Why It Works:
Children often feel powerless when big emotions hit. By giving them calming mantras (like emotional lifeboats), we grow internal strength and resilience. Over time, these mantras become their inner voice.

How To Teach It (During Calm Times):

  • Together, brainstorm short phrases like:
    • “This feeling will pass.”
    • “I can handle big feelings.”
    • “I am safe right now.”
  • Write each phrase on a card. Decorate them with crayons, stickers, or glitter pens.
  • Keep them in a “Calm Kit,” backpack, or nightstand.

When To Use It:

  • During or after a meltdown
  • Before bed
  • Before tests, school, or therapy

Practice Playfully:
Let your child create their own “superpower phrase.” Use it like a spell: “I’m saying my calm words now!” Make it part of a bedtime ritual: choose a mantra card of the night and say it aloud together.

Creative Prompt:
Draw or decorate your favorite mantra card. Hang it up somewhere special.
