Exercise 16: The Calm-Down Dance (Movement and Rhythm Regulation)

Exercise 16: The Calm-Down Dance (Movement and Rhythm Regulation)

What It Is:
A movement-based release activity that helps children regulate by combining dance, rhythm, and emotional expression.

Why It Works:
Rhythmic movement activates the brain’s sensorimotor regulation systems. It helps kids “shake out” tension and shift their state. Done in relationship, it also promotes attachment and shared regulation.

How To Teach It (During Calm Times):

  • Put on a favorite calm or playful song.
  • Invite your child to move however they feel — shake, sway, wiggle.
  • Take turns leading one move at a time. You can also freeze every 20 seconds.

When To Use It:

  • After a long day
  • Before nap or bed
  • When emotions are stuck or “won’t come out”

Practice Playfully:
Create a custom playlist called the “Calm-Down Soundtrack.” Let your child help pick the songs. Name your moves — “the floppy fish,” “the slow stomp,” or “the butterfly breath.

Reflection Prompt:
Which dance move felt the best in your body today?
