
Hope Is a Verb: A Love Letter to the Brave in Early Recovery
Written for anyone who’s holding on by a thread — and calling it hope.
Hope Isn’t the Absence of Pain. It’s the Refusal to Quit
The truth? Recovery is hard. It’s not a Hollywood montage. It’s not one brave decision and then fireworks. It’s gritty. Repetitive. Lonely some days. Numb others. You can go a whole week and not feel anything but exhaustion — and still be doing everything right.
Hope doesn’t erase that pain.
Hope says:
“Even in this pain, I will keep going.”
“Even in this numbness, I will stay alive.”
“Even when I feel worthless, I will not treat myself like I am.”
That’s not weakness. That’s sacred endurance.
That’s survival with soul.
And it’s what every long-term recovering person has done: walked through the hopeless days with hope stitched into their shoes, barely holding together — but moving anyway.
Hope Has Memory
Hope remembers.
Hope is the voice that says:
“You’ve survived worse than this.”
“You’ve made it through things that should have killed you — physically, emotionally, spiritually.”
“You don’t have to go back. You get to go forward.”
Hope is the long-term memory of your soul.
Even when your brain is foggy and your heart feels hollow, hope remembers the light. It remembers you.
And it keeps whispering: “You’re not done yet.”
Hope Can Be Borrowed
You don’t have to manufacture your own hope every day.
You can borrow mine.
You can borrow the hope of your sponsor, or your sober friend, or that person in a meeting who’s got five days more than you do and swears they’re still messed up but shows up anyway.
That’s what we do in this thing. We pass the torch. We hold the lantern for the one behind us on the trail. We say, “I’ll sit with you in the dark — and when you’re ready, we’ll walk together.”
So if your hope feels small today, that’s okay.
Just don’t set it down.
Tuck it in your pocket.
It’s enough.
Hope Rewires the Brain
When you feel hopeful — even slightly — your brain begins to change. You release dopamine, which fuels motivation. You activate parts of the prefrontal cortex tied to decision-making, self-control, and future planning.
Hope literally helps you see the future. And when you can see a future, you’re more likely to build one.
This is why hopelessness is so dangerous — and why recovery builds hope not just with words, but with action: meetings, steps, service, connection. Every one of these lays a new track in your brain, saying:
“This is worth it.”
“I’m worth it.”
“Something good might still come.”
Hope Doesn’t Always Feel Like Hope
Hope doesn’t always feel like a Hallmark card.
Sometimes hope feels like getting out of bed with no idea what for.
Sometimes hope feels like brushing your teeth even though you cried through the night.
Sometimes hope feels like not using even though your brain tells you it would be easier, faster, more familiar.
That’s still hope.
Hope doesn’t have to be pretty. It just has to be true.
In Case No One Told You Today…
You are allowed to want more.
You are allowed to get better even if you’ve hurt people.
You are allowed to heal even if you’ve made a mess.
You are allowed to hope — even if you don’t feel like you deserve it.
Because guess what? Hope isn’t about what you deserve.
Hope is about what’s possible.
And in recovery, possibility is everything.
Hope Is the Strongest Kind of Defiance
You know what hope really is?
It’s defiance.
It’s rebellion.
It’s the middle finger to despair, addiction, shame, and every story that told you you were done.
It’s standing in front of the wreckage of your past and saying:
“I am not just what I’ve done.
I am also what I’m becoming.”
It’s saying:
“I will stay.
I will rise.
I will keep walking.”
And it’s knowing — deep down — that every time you choose that, even shakily, you are creating a future that addiction never wanted you to see.
Final Words
So hold onto hope.
Even if it’s the size of a splinter.
Even if it’s buried beneath exhaustion and doubt.
Even if all you can do is whisper, “I’m still here.”
Because you are still here.
And that?
