Exercise 6: The Feelings Thermometer

Exercise 6: The Feelings Thermometer

What It Is:
A visual tool that helps kids rate the size and intensity of their emotions on a 0–10 scale, just like a thermometer shows temperature.

Why It Works:
Giving kids a concrete way to express how big a feeling is helps them regulate it. Instead of exploding or shutting down, they begin learning to say, “I’m at an 8,” which becomes a cue for calming tools or connection. This builds emotional literacy and self-regulation.

How To Teach It (During Calm Times):

  • Draw a thermometer from 0 to 10 together.
  • Label what each number might feel like. For example:
    • 0 = peaceful and calm
    • 3 = a little bothered
    • 7 = frustrated or scared
    • 10 = explosive or overwhelmed
  • Practice checking in with your child: “Where are you right now on your thermometer?”

When To Use It:

  • Morning check-ins
  • After an argument or upset
  • Before calming routines

Practice Playfully:
Color the thermometer using feeling-based colors (blue = calm, red = fire-hot mad). Roleplay stuffed animals or toys using the thermometer: “Looks like Mr. Bunny is at a 9! What does he need right now?”

Reflection Prompt:
Draw your own feelings thermometer. What color is calm? What color means “I need help”?
