Exercise 15: Emotional Weather Report (Verbal Co-Regulation Game)

Exercise 15: Emotional Weather Report (Verbal Co-Regulation Game)

What It Is:
A daily verbal check-in where emotions are described like weather: sunny, cloudy, stormy, foggy, etc.

Why It Works:
This playful metaphor gives children distance from their emotions while also teaching expression. It builds emotional vocabulary, regulation, and creates a nonjudgmental space for connection.

How To Teach It (During Calm Times):

  • Say: “Let’s check the emotional weather today!”
  • Give examples:
    • “I feel a little cloudy with a chance of grumpy.”
    • “You look sunny with a thunderstorm trying to roll in!”
  • Let your child describe their “forecast.”

When To Use It:

  • Morning routine
  • Before or after school
  • Family mealtimes

Practice Playfully:
Draw your weather face on a mini whiteboard or printable sheet. You can even make silly sounds: “Rumble rumble! My mad cloud is passing!” Let the emotion be expressed through the weather, not blamed on the child.

Reflection Prompt:
What’s your weather today? Has it changed since this morning?
